SEA-NYY Trade Opens Up LA Angels to Sign Patrick Corbin

This trade means a lot of things for the LA Angels. It means the Seattle Mariners are officially open for business, and the fire sale has commenced. It also means the Yankees have satisfied their offseason goal of adding an ace without spending a dollar in free agency.

But most importantly, this opens the door even more for the Angels to sign Patrick Corbin.

The New York Yankees have been linked to Corbin since he broke out early this season. As their season progressed, it became obvious they needed to add a true frontline starter to be considered a super team. Now, Paxton is that guy, meaning they may just want to invest their money in a Bryce Harper or Manny Machado type of player, or put together a super bullpen.

The Yankees have more money to spend than the Angels. They could have offered Corbin at least twice what the Angels likely will. But now, with their intentions possibly turning elsewhere, it takes the extremely lucrative deal out of the picture.

The LA Angels are seen across the MLB as one of the best fits for Corbin. He was originally drafted by the Halos, and would be the feature starter alongside Tyler Skaggs and Andrew Heaney for years to come. The Halos have around $25 million to spend this offseason, and a large portion of that could end up going towards Corbin if the Angels are able to entice the 29-year old to bring his talents to Anaheim.

Now, it is still likely the Yankees could still want to bring in another starter of Corbin’s caliber rather than signing Harper or Machado. However, they could be more inclined to find a more affordable option with Paxton now on board.
