Angels claim reliever Austin Brice off waivers from Reds – Orange County Register

The Angels claimed right-handed reliever Austin Brice on waivers from the Cincinnati Reds on Friday, adding a pitcher who had a 5.79 ERA in 37-1/3 innings last season.

The Angels also removed five players from their 40-man roster, most notably infielder Jefry Marte. Marte, 27, hit .216 with seven homers and a .644 OPS in 2018. He was out of options. The Angels also removed catcher Francisco Arcia and pitchers Odrisamer Despaigne, Deck McGuire and Eduardo Paredes from the roster. It is possible that some of them could still return to the organization.

Alex Meyer, JC Ramirez, Keynan Middleton, Jake Jewell, Nick Tropeano, Albert Pujols and Zack Cozart were all reinstated from the 60-day disabled list, which can’t be used over the winter.

The Angels currently have 39 players on their 40-man roster, and they’ll need to make more room later in the month for any minor league players they add to protect them from the Rule 5 draft.

Brice, 26, has pitched 84 innings in parts of three seasons with the Reds and Miami Marlins, posting a 5.68 ERA and 7.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

Brice will be out of options next season.

A former ninth-round pick, Brice has a career 4.05 ERA in the minors, with 8.8 strikeouts and 4.8 walks per nine innings.

Angels general manager Billy Eppler said they believe Brice has an above-average fastball and a solid curveball. He also said Brice has a history as a starter, so he might be able to work in a multi-inning relief role.
